A sexologist has done adult jobs and is now sharing her experiences

It was a free choice: this is how she entered the world of adult jobs and prostitution

Stories about prostitution tend to swing between two extremes. We either see only victims, or provocative narratives of freedom. Little is said about the grey zone where adult jobs can mean both exploitation and self-determination. The story of a Hungarian sexologist leads precisely into this zone. She first encountered the idea of sex job as a child, and recalls the event as a positive experience.

In a changing room after a ballet class, the presence of a strikingly elegant woman caught her attention. Something changes in the air when she arrives, adults lower their voices, the topic quickly shifts.

Yet the elegant woman kindly explains that she actually works as a prostitute.

She came across the concept of adult jobs in films as well

After the first encounter came the films, the romantic stories, where she gained a clearer picture of the world of adult jobs. From the film Pretty Woman she already learnt that, despite the light-hearted story, a prostitute’s life is not that simple.

Even then, she saw that women and men relate differently to prostitution, yet she could not quite grasp why these differences exist.

Adolescence speaks the language of shame and guilt. Expectations, labels and judgements cling to the female body, while no one explains how to function well within this system. There is plenty of talk about sex, but far less about boundaries, autonomy and the real possibilities of choice.

As an adult, with legal and psychological knowledge, prostitution is no longer a romantic concept.

The world of sex jobs is full of real dangers, vulnerability and violence. These stories are not inventions, but everyday realities.

And yet a question arises, one we rarely voice aloud: what about the women who enter this world not out of compulsion, but by their own decision?

Throughout history, women have repeatedly appeared who, within the framework of prostitution, gained rights and opportunities that were out of reach for other women.

Róza Pilisy in 19th-century Hungary not only ran a brothel, but created an intellectual hub, wrote, produced work, and owned property at a time when most women were deprived even of basic self-determination.

Figures like her also appear in other cultures and eras, always on the margins of social norms, yet influencing their time.

These were the sexologist’s experiences with an adult job

Réka Kékes’s personal path also fits into this historical arc. Today, as a somatic sexologist, she speaks about body awareness, desires, and self-knowledge, but in one period of her life she worked as a prostitute.

Not under external pressure, but after a deep emotional crisis, when she felt she had to go where her greatest fears and desires meet.

In this sense, prostitution was not an escape, but an attempt to regain control over her own body and life.

In the process, she experienced financial independence, attention, and power dynamics she had never encountered before.

And, in a way she found humiliating, she earned in a single week as much as twenty times a man’s average monthly salary.

She gained an understanding of people that she later put to good use in her professional work. For her, sex work was not a final destination, but part of an intensive learning process that deeply shaped her self-image and her relationship to womanhood.

Prostitution means something different to everyone

You cannot present the world of sex jobs in general terms. For some, it is exploitation; for others, a tool; and for some, a temporary stop. The meaning of an erotic job does not lie in itself, but in the environment in which it takes place. The same adult activity can mean something entirely different in different life situations.

While in some parts of the world women are still fighting for their basic rights, elsewhere the patterns that limit female autonomy continue under the surface of apparent equality.

In this context, prostitution is not an isolated phenomenon, but also a symptom and mirror of a larger social system.

The question is not whether it exists, but how we talk about it, and whose voices we hear in the process.
