Prostitution instead of vacation: people rent apartments for sex work and adult jobs
More and more people are using Airbnb and other accommodation websites to set up temporary
brothels. These apartments can be put up
for rent for short periods of time and used for sex work – this is called a “pop-up brothel.”
Paul (pseudonym, for the sake of discretion) found a horrifying sight when he returned home from his trip: trash everywhere in his apartment, used condoms in the bathroom.
His apartment in Berlin, rented out on Airbnb, was apparently used for
prostitution while he was away.
Who knows, maybe there were 20 or 50 guests here a week.

Paul's case is not unique. More and more vacation homes are being rented out for illegal prostitution.
Temporary brothels and prostitution are a growing problem
Stephan Fuchs, an employee of the Swiss organization "Victims of Human Trafficking", is helping German investigators fight a new type of exploitation that does not respect the rules of legal
adult jobs.
Since the COVID pandemic, more and more criminal gangs have been renting apartments for short periods of time for
prostitution.
There is no inspection in these apartments and they are easy to book.

According to Bär, a CSU politician,
Germany is a real paradise for forced prostitution, pimps and human traffickers.
He suggests that the purchase of sexual services should be banned. He believes this would reduce exploitation. The problem mainly affects women who are forced to work in such “pop-up brothels.”
Claudia Robbe, from the Women's Information Center (FiZ) in Stuttgart, said:
Many women don't even know which city they are in.
This makes it very difficult for them to seek help from aid organizations. Robbe is sure that this situation makes
sex workers vulnerable and puts them in danger.
"Usually, organized criminal networks are behind these apartments - the women themselves do not rent the apartments," added Claudia Robbe.
Police fight against undeclared erotic adult jobs
Although prostitution is legal in
Germany, it is only allowed in officially registered
brothels, erotic studios, laufhauses, and massage parlors. However, since the beginning of the pandemic, the number of women and sex workers who are sexually exploited has increased.
Experts say many cases likely remain hidden and never come to light.
Leipzig investigators, such as Sören F., reported that it is very difficult to track down such cases.
“Whether they rent apartments through Booking.com or Airbnb, these apartments are usually not officially registered. This makes it difficult to investigate,” he said. Even in cities where the police are well-equipped, it is difficult to crack down on illegal
sex work.
What are Airbnb and other companies doing to combat illegal use and prostitution?
Airbnb says it is working closely with police around the world.
Booking.com also says it is assisting authorities in any way it can.
According to investigator Sören F., however, working together with Airbnb is not always easy.
The company's headquarters are in Ireland, which makes communication difficult for the German police. You often have to wait a long time for their response.
