Mitch Larsson talks about sex work after he chose escort jobs instead of a career as a lawyer

Mitch Larsson, in his 40s, decided to abandon his law degree and become a sex worker. More specifically, he immersed himself in the world of escort jobs and is currently building his career as a male escort.

While sex work is associated with stigma and discrimination for many in Australia, Mitch says his career change has been an extremely positive experience.

Taking on adult work was "one of the best decisions he's ever made," he told ABC's RN Life Matters.



Despite the sacrifices made, Mitch says sex work has taught him about his own vulnerabilities and those of others, and he considers it one of his most meaningful jobs.

Escort jobs allowed him to feel free

Mitch, who grew up in Melbourne, said he was "always very independent and always keen to try new things".

He started by studying natural sciences and later sold software, and after his resignation, he took a motor trip around Australia. He eventually returned home to study law.

During this time, he met his future wife, a doctor. Shortly after graduation, the couple had a child, and it made sense for Mitch to stay home with the child since as a lawyer early in his career he was making less than his wife.

It was hard to get used to. Mitch said he felt "trapped" and found the long days at the playground, waiting for his wife home every day, and the lack of time for himself very difficult.

I fell into a deep depression during this time

- he shared.

This led him to make a decision he regretted.

"I cheated on her, but not physically. I started talking to a mother from our childcare center. My wife found out and it was just as horrible to her as if it had been physical and I felt terrible."

In order to keep their communication honest and their relationship intact, Mitch asked his wife if she would accept an open marriage; that is, stay together, but also meet other people.

"She didn't want to," Mitch said.

However, she read a lot of scientific articles about the extent to which this solution could be successful, and finally agreed.

Meanwhile, the woman he had been flirting with from the daycare planted a thought in his head.

He liked escort jobs

Mitch's wife saw escort work as an extension of their open relationship and supported her husband as he entered the world of sex work.

Both thought that taking on erotic jobs would only be a side-gig.

But after Mitch posted an online erotic job ad in early 2019, the bookings came in almost immediately. In some cases, the adultwork also involved international travel, sometimes he traveled to other states.

At that time, they did not know how successful erotic jobs were for men.

His clients were between 30 and 70 years old. Among them were women who had lost their partner or who had not had a partner for a long time and were embarrassed about physical intimacy. Some have lived in violent relationships before.

Mitch says many of his clients have told him they've been cheated on, felt judged or not listened to by men, or had their sexual needs not met by their partners - all of which affected their self-confidence. That is why they turned to a male sex worker.

I often had clients who were visibly shaking [and who] could barely speak.

The male escort was often told:

"Am I doing it well?" Or, "Would you like me to do this better?"

He believes it was a "relief" for his clients to be able to "talk about their whole lives, what brought them to him and what they needed from him in a non-judgmental, completely free environment."

This accounted for roughly 80 percent of the erotic jobs. Then when the time came, and if they were comfortable enough, we could continue.

He helps women during sex job

According to Mitch, many women find it difficult to express their sexual desires. It was difficult for them to relax and focus on their own pleasure.

He saw his role as a sex worker to help his clients with both issues.

"I think it was good because... I could give them the confidence to go on a date armed with some sexual knowledge," said the man with and adult job.

He regularly consults with clients.

As always, constant enthusiastic consent is essential, especially if you do sexwork as a profession.

But communication begins long before you meet a client.

Even before the meetings, he always called them to discuss the exact details and to add a voice to his pictures in the ad.

Mitch, who wrote about his experiences in Time For Her: A Memoir of True Romance, says he loves his erotic job.

He enjoyed his role as the new "breadwinner" after not working for several years.

But more than that, he enjoyed providing an erotic service that he believes has helped many women feel better about themselves.

After less than a year, it was almost impossible to maintain a balance between private life and adult work. More and more people applied for his erotic job offer, and he worked almost 3-4 nights a week.

It was difficult for him to find a middle ground, sometimes his family took a backseat to his erotic job.

He says his wife could not count on him to fulfill his "basic parental duty" because he was either too tired or had to be elsewhere. Just before the onset of COVID 2020, the couple divorced and Mitch moved out of the family home.

I was quite lonely.

"I was living alone during the COVID lockdowns, but I had to pull myself together to do the sexy job properly. And that proved very difficult at times," he said.

"I couldn't think about missing my son or what my family was doing. I had to think as a single man who had to please whoever he was with."

Having to constantly focus on his appearance began to take a toll on his self-confidence.

I had to pay attention to every detail to make myself as perfect as possible

- said the sex worker.

Mitch was burned out and realized earlier this year that it was time to leave the adult industry.

He doesn't mind that he chose an erotic career, because sex work led him to where he is today.

He now teaches new older escorts and companions (40+), writes a regular column on sex and relationships, and hopes to eventually move into a teaching role teaching young boys about consent and respectful relationships.

And he says he also learned lessons from his adult jobs that he will carry with him forever.

Examples include the importance of honesty and good communication, and being brave enough to try new things.
