Gay porn work offers an alternative for female viewers too
When we talk about gay adult jobs, most people imagine a very specific type of work, with a very specific audience. A recent survey by
Pornhub revealed something surprising:
47% of viewers of gay male porn
are women. That means nearly one in every two viewers is female, a statistic that might change the way we think about gay
porn jobs and who they're really for.
Yes, even though
gay porn is made with male-on-male action, it attracts a huge number of female viewers worldwide. And that has an interesting effect on the kind of content being created, and on the types of male performers that are in demand.
Men working in gay
adult films are likely aware that their audience isn't made up solely of gay men. In fact, there's been a growing interest from female viewers in gay male content, and it's changing the landscape of the industry.
Every year, during Pride Month, one of the world’s most well-known adult video platforms publishes statistics on the popularity of LGBTQ+ content.
Their annual report offers a detailed look at search habits, top categories, and the
most-watched gay male performers.
Not a new trend: women have been watching gay porn for years
While it may seem surprising at first, this isn’t a new phenomenon. As early as 2014,
Pornhub reported that gay porn content was already popular among female viewers.
Just a year later, it was revealed that the
“gay male” category consistently ranked as the second most searched genre among women on the platform.
It’s clear that
adult jobs for men offer real opportunities in the
porn industry, and that female viewers are genuinely interested in this kind of content.
Since then, several academic studies have supported these findings. In her 2018 book
“Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys,” researcher Lucy Neville interviewed over 500 women to explore this very topic.
Many of the women surveyed said they enjoy gay porn simply because they’re attracted to the male body and how it’s shown on screen.
According to Neville, gay porn differs from traditional heterosexual porn, which is typically designed around the
male gaze and tailored to the fantasies of
straight men.
In contrast, gay porn offers an alternative for viewers who are primarily attracted to men, including heterosexual women.
Another important factor is that many women who have experienced sexual violence see gay porn as a safer option.
Because there are no female performers involved, they aren’t left wondering whether the woman is truly enjoying herself or whether she might be being harmed, exploited, or humiliated.
Pornhub’s Pride Month report also revealed that the 18–24 age group is the most active consumer of this content (27%), while viewers aged 65 and over make up just 11% of the audience.
