Are you interested in adult jobs and want to go to Amsterdam? Only after you complete the Google quiz
Amsterdam has been trying to keep scandalous tourists away for years: they campaigned against British "beer tourists", banned the consumption of marijuana in public areas of the city center and in the
red light district, and ordered bars to close at two in the morning.
Now they have created a typically Dutch straightforward online quiz for those who visit the city not only for the tulips and Stroopwafels, but also for fun and
adult jobs.
"Would you like some cocaine?"
- asks one of Amsterdam Rules' questions, while another questions you with:
"Would you like to explore the city with a drink or a joint in hand?"
However, those who would organize a pub crawl or bachelor party are met with the following message:
"This will be problematic. Forbidden.” And those who answer yes to questions like,
"Would you like a guided tour of the red light district?", they get the same answer:
"This is no longer possible."
They try to dispel misconceptions about laws and adult jobs
The city government launched the interactive campaign a few weeks ago, which will soon be available in English, Italian, French and Spanish.
The campaign emphasizes that many things that are commonly associated with Amsterdam and the
Netherlands are actually against the rules.
Amsterdam currently finds itself in a contradictory situation: on the one hand, it is desperately looking for tourism tax revenues, and post-epidemic tourism is still not the real thing yet.
On the other hand, they are faced with those who throw up on the streets, make noise, and relieve themselves in various public places.
Despite trying to discourage them, last year the number of nightly shenanigans increased by 21% to
nine million.
"We're trying it a little differently," explained Sofyan Mbarki, deputy mayor of Amsterdam. –
"In the future, Google searches such as 'Amsterdam coffee shop', 'red light district, Amsterdam' or 'Amsterdam bachelor party',
will go straight to this quiz through Google Ads.
The purpose of the quiz is therefore to change the image of partygoers about Amsterdam and local
sex work, but the question is whether this can be achieved with questions such as:
"Which famous Dutch product would you like to try? Cocaine?”
The purpose of the quiz, which costs at least 165.000 euros and is partly financed by the Ministry of Justice, is to sober up those who complete it before booking a plane ticket.
Anyone who clicks on several answers that break the rules will receive this rating:
Too bad... Considering your preferences, Amsterdam may not offer the experiences you're looking for.
Can an online quiz be enough to deter partygoers?
We're not the only skeptics: Maarten Bruinsma, president of Amsterdam Gastvrij, representing B&B owners, believes that
"the city seems to want to scare away potential visitors who are willing to fill in questionnaires."
Vincent van Dijk, the organizer of Hotel Night, put it less officially:
"It's great that they've clarified the rules, but the website is depressing, childish and useless unless you manage to collect the fines."
The leader of the local Christian Democratic Party, Rogier Havelaar, pointed out the contradiction when he noted that while this campaign was launched,
“in the international press we read about the plans for Europe's biggest brothel and the legalization of cocaine. How does this fit into the branding campaign?”
In fact, the mayor of
Amsterdam, Femke Halsema, would regulate the sale and consumption of cocaine in order to reduce the profits of criminal gangs, thereby also affecting
sex workers.
Smoking weed has already been banned in the red light district, and measures were taken to limit access to the sex workers doing their adult work:

Although we certainly do not see all aspects of the problem, an online quiz does not seem to be a satisfactory answer to every challenge.
